We"ll see where it goes...

Essay on Terrorism

Under the term "terrorism", we understand the use of violence and intimidation for political or religious goals. The terrorism usually targets at the civilian population and it creates an atmosphere of horror for pressure the government or other representatives of power. There are plenty of things that give birth to terrorism, they include different kinds of fanaticism, racism, political frustration and interests.
In a measure, you may say that terrorism existed in the 19th century as well. Many people identify terrorists as revolutionaries who killed government functionaries. However, it is substantially a phenomenon of the 20th and now the 21st century. When the society became, on the whole, more religious, fundamentalists and secessionists became more active and their technical equipment affects the lives of innocent people all over the globe.
For the second half of the 20th century Israel, Great Britain, and Italy suffered from the terrorism most of all. All the most noticeable actions were performed by Islamic fundamentalists from AL-Qaeda early in the 21st century. The most famous one was the terrorist attack when towers of World Trade Center in New York, USA, were destructed on 11th of September 2001. About 3000 people died that time. Russia, approximately at the same time, suffered from several attacks of Chechen terrorists-secessionists.
The danger of terrorism has changed our lives. Countries are now gathering information about terrorists on a more worldwide level. But in spite of accepting, extent terrorism is still a serious threat for common people. It is considered to be the pressing problem of our time. Drastic measures should be taken in order to address the situation as peacefully as possible.

No Terrorism!

Terrorism is hatred. Human to human. Human to humanity.

M.Boltunov.

There are so many problems in the world nowadays. One of the most dangerous of them is terrorism. More and more news begin with the information about terrorist acts. More and more magazines, newspapers write about these awful violent events. And every year there are more and more countries which stand face to face with this terrible problem. Terrorists` attacks can be compared to a disaster. A lot of people die and get wounded because of these acts. Sometimes people are scared to go to cinemas, theaters, cafes, supermarkets and other places where they want to have fun and rest, just because they understand that tragedy can reach them everywhere. I cannot understand those who commit bombings, killings and hijackings. Bandits want to kill as many innocent people as they can. I think terrorist is a man who has no values of life, who has inhuman cruelty. Nobody can be indifferent to people`s death and sufferings, especially when children become a deadly target of terrorism. We still remember the Beslan tragedy.

During the opening ceremony for the new school year terrorists took schoolchildren, teachers and parents hostages and herded them into a gymnasium. As far as I remember our whole school held a minute`s silence in honor of the victims of this hostage crisis in North Ossetia.

Another tragedy in Dubrovka, in the theatrical centre "Nord-Ost" on 23rd of October 2002 shocked all the people not only in Russia but in the world. Everybody really admired of some people, for example, the famous kid`s doctor Leonid Roshal, singers Alla Pugacheva, Iosif Kobzon and a politician Irina Hakamada who tried to save the hostages` lives and led the negotiations. As a result of this terrorist act many citizens were killed among them a student of the university from our capital Cheboksary turned up.

The last terrible terror act in Domodedovo International Airport on January, 24, 2011 again horrified civilians. The bombing killed and injured a great number of people. As for me I am deeply concerned at terrorist acts especially at those which occurred in Moscow at least because my sister lives and learns there. She is a student of the first course in the D. Mendeleev University Chemical Technology of Russia.

But not only the Russians suffer from terrorism. People all over the world remember the tragedies of Madrid and London, Turkey, Egypt and in Jordan. And who has not heard about the greatest disaster in New York on the 11th of September, 2001.

What makes a terrorist to commit terrible actions? I am always interested in this topic. I think disappointment in life first of all. Then anger, psychological instability, mental illness, spiritual crisis follow. To my mind there are many root causes of terrorism: lack of affordable housing, lack of measures to ensure the safety of the public, poverty, illiteracy, bad education, wide propaganda of the cinema, television, press, literature and the cult of cruelty and the crisis of modern society. For example, in some countries of the East children are brought up under the slogans of terrorism.

In addition terrorism can bring considerable income to some people. Trade in weapons, drugs, make huge profits to them. When there is mass closure of industries, price increase, inflation and unemployment terrorism becomes for some people the only way to earn money. Nowadays the world has realized the need to intensify the fight against terrorism. In fact, terrorism has declared a war to the world. To my mind terrorism can be called a "plague of the 21 century" because it results the loss of innocent human lives. That`s why people should propose measures to prevent and punish terrorism. We must unite in the struggle against terrorism! The power must adopt special anti-terrorism laws, people must do everything to prevent terrorist attacks and control the production of weapons. I think that all people must fight against terrorism. Despite the fact that I live in the remote place, in a small village the problem of terrorism does not leave indifferent me. They say "Beware of him who has nothing to lose".

I hope that there will never be terrorism in my life.

In my opinion terrorism is not just a problem! It`s a global tragedy of our century and all humanity! Like millions of people in the world I deny terrorism and say "No Terrorism!".

There are many problems in our world and people suffer a lot because of them. Some of these problems are created by people, some of them happen because of the nature. Terrorism is one of the most important problems nowadays.

If you ask any child at school or even in kindergarten, they have already known the meaning of this word. Terrorist is a person who uses violence against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims. If you have ever watched the news or other programs on TV, if you use internet and read articles sometime, you have sure heard about different cases that happened around the world. The government doesn’t really want to say, that some catastrophe or problem have happened because of terrorism. But most of the times terrorists don’t want to hide and they are ready to do everything to achieve their goals.

There is a famous organization OSCE that tries to manage with this problem all around the world. All countries are participants. I think in this situation, there is no “your problem” or “my problem”. There is our problem and we must stop or at least prevent these cases. OSCE fights with terrorism because it’s a serious crime and it doesn’t have any justification. I do believe that any problem can be solved in piece with only conversation.

I am far away from politics and still don’t understand many things, but I am sure any kind of violence is not good.

In general I think people which ready to become terrorists, they are mentally sick. I read in internet that many killers and terrorists can not manage with their psyche and they start to kill.

Not only organizations in the world, but also ordinary people have to be attentive. Unfortunately terrorism has still many supporters and any accident can happen. One explosion in the building or on the railway station, broken bus, poisoned gas and many other things. But if we are more careful and attentive, we can prevent these accidents or at least some of them.

Terrorism is a term used to describe violence or the perception or threat of imminent violence.

Types of Terrorism.

  • Civil Disorders – A form of collective violence interfering with the peace, security, and normal functioning of the community.
  • Political Terrorism – Violent criminal behaviour designed primarily to generate fear in the community, or substantial segment of it, for political purposes.
  • Non-Political Terrorism – Terrorism that is not aimed at political purposes but which exhibits “conscious design to create and maintain high degree of fear for coercive purposes, but the end is individual or collective gain rather than the achievement of a political objective”.
  • Quasi-Terrorism – The activities incidental to the commission of crimes of violence that are similar in form and method to genuine terrorism but which nevertheless lack its essential ingredient. It is not the main purpose of the quasi-terrorists to induce terror in the immediate victim as in the case of genuine terrorism, but the quasi-terrorist uses the modalities and techniques of the genuine terrorist and produces similar consequences and reaction. For example, the fleeing felon who takes hostages is a quasi-terrorist, whose methods are similar to those of the genuine terrorist but whose purposes are quite different.
  • Limited Political Terrorism – Genuine political terrorism is characterized by a revolutionary approach; limited political terrorism refers to “acts of terrorism which are committed for ideological or political motives but which are not part of a concerted campaign to capture control of the State.
  • Official or State Terrorism – referring to nations whose rule is based upon fear and oppression that reach similar to terrorism or such proportions.”

Terrorist attacks are often targeted to maximize fear and publicity. They usually use explosives or poison, but there is
also concern about terrorist attacks using weapons of mass destruction. Terrorist organizations usually methodically plan attacks in advance, and may train participants, plant «undercover» agents, and raise money from supporters or
through organized crime. Communication may occur through modern telecommunications, or through old-fashioned
methods such as couriers.

The 11th of September, 2001

On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001 terrorists attacked America in a series of despicable acts of war. They hijacked
four passenger jets, crashed two of them into the World Trade Center’s twin Towers and a third into the Headquarter of the US Department of Defense at the Pentagon, causing great loss of life and tremendous damage. The fourth plane crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside killing all on board but falling well short of its intended target apparently because of the heroic efforts of passengers on board. This carriage which caused.

The collapse of both Trade Center Towers and the destruction of part of the Pentagon killed more than 250 airplane passengers and thousands more on the ground. The newspapers were head-lined: “US attacked”, “America’s bloodiest day”, “Terrorists in jet killed thousands”, “Terrorists destroyed World Trade Center, hit Pentagon in raid with
hijacked jet”. Civilized people around the world denounce the evildoers who devised and expected these
terrible attacks. Justice demands that those who helped the terrorists must be punished. The USA uses all the resources of the country and allies to pursue those responsible for this evil, until justice is done. Everybody mourns with those who have suffered great. Nowdays the 11th of September is observed as A National Day of Prayer and Remembrance, honoring the memory of the thousands of victims of these brutal attacks.

And thereby to bring about a particular political objective. Terrorism has been practiced by political organizations with both rightist and leftist objectives, by nationalistic and religious groups, by revolutionaries, and even by state institutions such as armies, intelligence services, and police.

Definitions of terrorism

Definitions of terrorism are usually complex and controversial, and, because of the ferocity and violence of terrorism, the term in its popular usage has developed an intense stigma. It was first coined in the 1790s to refer to the terror used during the by the revolutionaries against their opponents. The Jacobin party of carried out a involving mass executions by the . Although terrorism in this usage implies an act of violence by a state against its domestic enemies, since the 20th century the term has been applied most frequently to violence aimed, either directly or indirectly, at governments in an effort to influence policy or topple an existing regime.

Terrorism is not legally defined in all jurisdictions; the statutes that do exist, however, generally share some common elements. Terrorism involves the use or threat of violence and seeks to create fear, not just within the direct victims but among a wide audience. The degree to which it relies on fear distinguishes terrorism from both conventional and warfare. Although conventional military forces invariably engage in against the enemy, their principal means of victory is strength of arms. Similarly, guerrilla forces, which often rely on acts of terror and other forms of propaganda , aim at military victory and occasionally succeed (e.g., the in Vietnam and the in Cambodia). Terrorism proper is thus the systematic use of violence to generate fear, and thereby to achieve political goals, when direct military victory is not possible. This has led some social scientists to refer to as the “weapon of the weak” and terrorism as the “weapon of the weakest.”

In order to attract and maintain the publicity necessary to generate widespread fear, terrorists must engage in increasingly dramatic, violent, and high-profile attacks. These have included , takings, kidnappings, car bombings, and, frequently, suicide bombings. Although apparently random, the victims and locations of terrorist attacks often are carefully selected for their shock value. Schools, shopping centres, bus and train stations, and restaurants and nightclubs have been targeted both because they attract large crowds and because they are places with which members of the civilian population are familiar and in which they feel at ease. The goal of terrorism generally is to destroy the public’s sense of security in the places most familiar to them. Major targets sometimes also include buildings or other locations that are important economic or political symbols, such as embassies or military installations. The hope of the terrorist is that the sense of terror these acts engender will induce the population to pressure political leaders toward a specific political end.

Some definitions treat all acts of terrorism, regardless of their political motivations, as simple criminal activity. For example, in the the standard definition used by the (FBI) describes terrorism as “the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.” The element of criminality, however, is problematic, because it does not distinguish among different political and legal systems and thus cannot account for cases in which violent attacks against a government may be legitimate . A frequently mentioned example is the (ANC) of , which committed violent actions against that country’s apartheid government but commanded broad sympathy throughout the world. Another example is the movement against the Nazi occupation of France during .
