Orientation Week

The first of September assembly has remained a traditional event marking the beginning of an academic year also for the students of higher grades, because the summer holidays are over and now there is another pleasant possibility to start a school year together with classmates and teachers. IB Students start the new academic year with Orientation Week, where we get to know each other and communicate School procedures and values, also to have interesting sessions, that will help the Students to pass IB studies more successfully.

The Freshmen Day

Every school has the tradition to initiate the new students of the tenth grade. So does the Audentes Private School. This is the day that the seniors are waiting with excitement, the students of the tenth grade with thrill and the teachers with fear.

Teachers’ Day

Teachers’ Day is always very much awaited by the students as well as the teachers. This is the day when the seniors can try their teaching skills and the teachers get a day when to sit behind a class desk themselves. Also all other students like this day very much, because now not a real teacher but one of themselves is standing in front of the class, providing an example!

Christmas Lunch

It is a very nice tradition to send the entire school to the Christmas holidays with a common Christmas lunch, enjoying the peaceful Christmas time. This takes place always on the last day of the second school term, after the Christmas assembly.

Global Awareness Week

At the end of January IB Students are organizing a week full of interesting activities-workshops, lectures, global cafe, Model United Nations sessions etc. to promote international-mindedness across the School.

St Valentine’s Day

In Estonia St Valentine`s is more celebrated as a day of friendship and at Audentes School we have a full week devoted to celebrating St Valentine`s. Week is traditionally organized by Student Council and therefore activities differ every year, but usually we have letter box to share the Valentine`s cards and cafe.

Anniversary of the Republic of Estonia

To celebrate this day, very beautiful and festive concerts are held everywhere, and also the Audentes Private School is not an exception.

TOK Week

In the middle of April we are devoting full week to tackle with knowledge questions and organize trans-disciplinary lessons.

The last school bell

This is a day for small tricks. Every senior can feel himself or herself as a little boy or girl of the first class, but also realize with some sadness that the school time is coming to an end.

Graduation ball

Graduation ball is for all High School Students, but with special emphasis to our graduating year. It is traditionally organized by 11th graders and Student Council.

End of the year Picnic

At the beginning of June, when the academic year is about to end all Students, graduates, parents and teachers are invited to a informal gathering the celebrate the beginning of summer.

SCHOOL TRADITIONS

Let’s talk about school traditions. School is not only learning. A school year is nine months long and it’s full of events! Many of them became traditions because they happen every year on the same dates. Some traditions are similar in all Belarusian schools, some are unique.

The school year starts on September, 1. This day is special for all: schoolchildren, their teachers and parents. The day starts with the school gathering when all classes and teachers stand in front of the school and listen to the welcoming speeches of their teachers, schoolmates and parents. Students look really nice in their new school uniforms! Everyone is excited to see their school friends and teachers after long summer holidays. After the school gathering teachers take their classes to their classrooms for the first lesson. When the lesson is over, students may have a class event – a picnic or a walk in the park or a class trip. The events of this day are usually the same every year but everyone waits for this day, likes it and remembers it.

Besides the 1 st of September, there are a lot other interesting traditions at school. They are the Teachers’ Day, Women’s Day, Health Days, Reunion Day, School Olympiads, Autumn and Spring Sports Weeks and others.

On Women’s Day there are concerts for girls and women in every school. Boys and men give them flowers and presents. On Teachers’ Day there are concerts for teachers. Pupils give flowers to their teachers. On Reunion Day all school leavers gather together at schools. They come and meet their teachers and their former classmates. On School Olympiads there are competitions in all school subjects. On Health Day schoolchildren have a talk with doctors and carry out class projects on health.

But my favourite school tradition is the Sports Week. I like it. You have the opportunity to show your athletic skills and abilities. We have Sports Weeks every season but my favourite is the Autumn Sports Week and it’s the last week of September. The Sports Week takes place in all school sports grounds: in the gym, on the football pitch and the basketball and volleyball courts.

Everyone from the 1 st to the 11 th class takes part in it. Our teachers take part in some events too. There is a wide range of activities which the Sport Week offers. It opens with a running race in which all students take part. Then we have competitions in different sports: we play sports games, run, jump. The week finishes with the Closing ceremony where the winners get their cups, medals and prizes.

STUDYING AT SCHOOL

Let’s talk about studying at school. All children at the age of six go to school. Schooling is free, universal and compulsory. Children leave school at the age of seventeen, so school becomes their second home. Its aim is to help students find strengths. School tries to develop their talents and abilities. It offers the best facilities for all the students. School encourages interest and enthusiasm both during and after classes. Our Belarusian school is famous for its tradition of Honesty, Friendliness and Excellence. Respect for each other is the golden rule, because every child is an individual.

School classes usually begin at eight o’clock. Children have classes five days a week. But on Saturdays they have some extra-curriculum activities. Every day schoolchildren have five or six lessons. Students have a timetable. There are many different subjects on the timetable. They study Russian and Belarusian, Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, PE and Handcraft. After the second lesson they have lunch.

Students have at their disposal a library, a foreign language study, Chemistry, Biology and Physics laboratories and a gym. The library has thousands of books, audio books, reference books and multimedia computers, which are necessary for making projects and self-study. Here the students can do their homework, search for the information on the Internet and relax reading books.

At the laboratories for Chemistry, Biology and Physics the students can conduct experiments and carry out scientific projects. It is necessary for those who want to learn Science in their future life.

The Language Study is a language laboratory with computers. Here the students can practice foreign languages and get help from experienced teachers. It is helpful if they want to enrich their vocabulary and to get a better command of a foreign language.

The gym is used for many different sports and after-class activities with all the equipment.

The classes are over at one or two o’clock. After classes the students go in for sports, dancing, drawing and other activities. There is a number of school clubs and societies for each pupil, which offer opportunities to develop different talents and skills.

Schoolchildren have autumn, winter and spring holidays for ten days. School is over at the end of May and summer holidays are the longest.

There are four seasons in a year. They are winter, spring, summer and autumn. There are three months in each season. December, January and February are winter months. March, April and May are spring months. Summer months are June, July and August. Then Autumn months come: September, October and November.

Winter is the coldest season of the year. Summer is the warmest season. Spring is warmer than winter but it is colder than summer. Autumn is also colder than summer but it is warmer than winter.

Every season has its own charm and is good in its own way. There is much snow in winter. It often snows. I like to ski, skate and sledge in winter. In spring we enjoy the first grass, green leaves and the first flowers. The sun shines

brighter and the days become longer. Summer is the hottest season when there are a lot of fruit, berries and vegetables. Schoolchildren have their longest holidays. It"s my favourite season. I like to swim, lie in the sun, play outdoors in summer. The weather is usually fine. Sometimes it rains. But the rains are usually warm.

Autumn comes after summer. It brings rains and cold weather. But it"s a tasty and beautiful season. Because there are a lot of fruits in autumn: apples, pears, grapes, plums, watermelons and melons. The leaves are red, green and yellow and they fall down from the trees. On the 1 st of September we go to school. A school year begins.

Weather and Climate

Now let’s talk about environment. People say that our planet is in danger. Do you share this opinion?

Yes, I do. Our Earth is so beautiful. It’s full of wonders and gives people it’s reaches to live and enjoy. Our ancestors used nature as consumers and in the 20 th century man’s economic activities began to produce an increasingly negative effect on the environment. One of the consequences is acid rain. Another one is water shortage resulting from abuse of arable lands in agriculture. The third one is destroying the ozone layer of the Earth through pollution from factories & plants. The fourth problem is damage to water & soils. The fifth one is damage to wildlife: numerous species of animals & plants can disappear. In our country the worst problem is probably the effect of the Chernobyl disaster.

What do you think people should do to protect the environment?

We can’t live without fresh air, clean water, sunshine, and a lot of things which we take from nature. That’s why we must take care of it. We must learn to use the environment carefully & protect it from damage caused by man’s activities. It is the small efforts of each individual that can add up to a great result.

What would you like to ask your British friend about measures that are taken to protect the environment?

What environmental issues are the most crucial for your country?

Which waste in Britain are recycled?

Do people in your country save electricity/water?

Are there many “green events” in your country? Have you ever taken part in any of them?

A friend of yours wants to develop a programme to protect the city where he lives. Give him a piece of advice.

It’s not too late to solve ecological problems. And in your city you have the time. The money and even the technologies to make your city a better, cleaner and safer place. You can maintain a blog on environmental issues and green living. You can plant trees that are a great source of oxygen, turn down the heating to save the energy, say “no” to plastic bags and take your own shopping bag to the supermarket. Take your waste into separate bins for glass, for plastic and for metal in order to recycle it. Do these things yourself and ask your friends and neighbors to follow.

Green school of the year contest is held in the country and you want your school to enter it. Give ideas of some green events.

Eco-farming. We may use some agro-ecological methods at our school garden show the results (our harvest) in public and teach others.

We may fit energy-saving light bulbs all over the college and save electricity. We may take our old notebooks and other paper wastes and prepare them for recycling.

The organization of “Green” Saturdays with planting trees and bushes will be of great value too.

I have just finished school number ... My school is (not) very new and modem and (but) it is very conformable and all the pupils like it very much, it is really home for everyone, who studies there. It has three (four, five, two) floors. The classrooms are light and high. There are classrooms for practically all the subjects - English, History, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography, Literature, etc. There is a computer class in our school, -where pupils study computing, one of the most important subjects nowadays. There is a school hall in our school, too. Meetings, conferences, concerts and all the celebrations take place there.

Our school has a gymnasium and a sportsground. Many pupils are fond of sport and they have a good opportunity to go in for different sports there.

I am very thankful to my school. When I was only seven years old, I entered it to get some knowledge and I know many things now thanks to my school and my teachers. The teachers in my school are very kind and clever, they give all their knowledge and all their love to the pupils.

There is a good tradition in our school. Every year the school leavers come here to meet their teachers and classmates. Such meetings are very touching and interesting.

I"ll never forget my school, my favourite teachers and my classmates. It is my childhood and it is the happiest period in one"s life, to my mind. My first friends, my first love and my first achievements and disappointments are all connected with my school life.

Pupils spend at school the most important years in their lives. Their character and perception of the world are formed there. In this period they grow up, get stronger, find friends, develop their talents and skills and begin to understand life. Therefore school remains in our hearts all our life.

I have studied at gymnasium №1. Last year we celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of our school. From my point of view, it"s one of the best schools in our town.

At our school there is everything necessary for our study and leisure. The 3-storeyed school building itself is of a typical design. But its corridors and classrooms are very beautiful. There are a lot of indoor plants and flowers in it. Its corridors are decorated with ceramics made by our pupils and teachers. There are cosy benches where one can sit and talk to friends.

We have a modern library where we can read books, enjoy pictures and virtual galleries, surf the internet. There is a tradition to organize exhibitions and meetings there. I have been able to see pictures of famous artists from our town, listen to poets, writers, artists and journalists in our library. To my mind it"s a good tradition when both pupils and teachers come to the library to meet a famous person, have a look at the beauty of fine arts or just discuss an interesting book which is being read for our "Big Reading" project.

The school hall is decorated with photos of our teachers and people who studied in our gymnasium. It shows another tradition we have. Twice a year our pupils and teachers arrange Project Days which give everybody a unique possibility to learn some skills. The participants do some research and prepare all necessary things beforehand and on the Project Day they make exhibitions, decorate the walls with pictures and handmade things, decorate old furniture, learn dances and songs and do a lot more. In my opinion, this tradition helps us to be united and learn new things which are important to us.

I have always been fond of taking part in extra-class activities such as concerts, debate clubs, intellectual games, sports competitions, picnics and excursions. These activities are popular with pupils, teachers and parents as they help to create a kind of team spirit.

Our school keeps up kind relations with secondary schools in Germany, France and Sweden. So we took part in different school projects and told foreign pupils about our culture and school traditions as well.

I"d like to say once again that school means a lot to me in many ways. My teachers are highly educated people. And what is no less important, their attitude to the pupils is always friendly and tolerant. My heart is full of gratitude to the teachers for the knowledge they give me and to many of my friends for making my school life enjoyable.

Школа - наш второй дом

No doubt that school is our second home. We spend a lot of time at school acquiring deep knowledge, which can help us to understand our life better. It plays an important role in our lives. It is here that characters and views are formed. It is at this time that they grow and make friends and learn to understand life. School helps to mould a personality. Whatever school years may be, they remain in our hearts forever.

The school where I study is situated not far from my house. It was built in 1974. It is a modern four-storeyed building of all typical design. Our school is named after B. S. Okrestin, hero of the Soviet Union. One can see the memorial complex devoted B. S. Okrestin and nine hero-pilots in front of the school. There is a big sports ground in front of the school, too. Here on the sports ground pupils have classes in physical training. They also have different festivalities here.

When you enter the school, you"ll see a large gymnasium, a workshop and a canteen on the left. The Headmaster"s office is on the ground floor. The cloakroom is downstairs. The classrooms, the laboratories, the doctor"s office, the library, the teacher"s room, the Assembly Hall, are on the upper floor. Our Physics, Chemistry, Botany and English labs are equipped with TV sets, tape-recorders, record players. Experiments are carried out in the laboratories. The pupils get the scientific knowledge in these labs. All school celebrations, meetings, performances and gatherings are held in the Assembly Hall.

Our school is a specialized English school and children begin studying English from the first form. The classes are split into three groups: for the language study and there are English lessons almost every day. When the children move up to the 6th form they begin studying the second language - French or German. Being the pupils of an English school they try to do their best to improve the knowledge of the English language, to learn history, culture and traditions of Great Britain and the USA. Our school theatre stages plays by the English and American writers in English.

Different traditions are observed in our school. It has become a tradition to mark the Day of Knowledge on the first of September, to receive guests from foreign countries to hold subbotniks. Every year on February 19, we mark B. S. Okrestin"s birthday.

We learn different subjects at school. And school develops our good work and study habits. If we want to develop speaking, reading and writing skills we ought to write spelling tests, compositions and dictations, to read more additional literature, to go on educational excursions and nature trips. We ought to acquire a profound and serious knowledge. Industriousness and responsibility, diligent work at the lessons, teacher"s encouragement gives us opportunity to develop good work habits.
